Qazi Nurullah’s Martyrdom

The Ihqaqul Haqq raised a storm of opposition. The ascension of Jehangir had the orthodox Sunni leaders to lobby against the Qazi. There was no support for the Qazi  at Jehangir’s court. Arabic passages from the “Ihqaqul Haqq” criticising the first three Caliphs seem to have been translated into Persian and read to the Emperor.

On 7th September 1610 C.E., he was flogged to death in the middle of the night.

In order to justify his killing the courtiers of Jehangir concocted the story that one-day Jehangi asked the Qazi as to his faith. The Qazi replied that he was a Shafai. On hearing this Jehangir was enraged and ordered him to be flogged.

However, it is a very improbable that the Qazi would have practised taqiyya at a time when he was already famous as a Shia. The actual reason of his being killed was the writing of the book “Ihqaqul Haqq”.
